Gene Kangas has been interested in art his entire life. He earned a
Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture and taught art at the
university level for thirty-two years. Recently retired as a
Professor Emeritus from that profession, Gene gained public
recognition as an artist via commissions to design, build, and
install large site specific sculptures for the past quarter century.
Today his focus
has evolved into narratives in WOOD using a state-of-the-art
lathe. Sculptures, which once portrayed figural steel profiles, have
evolved into portraits cut in reverse. Please contact
CREEKSIDE for
further information about his artwork, and/or to inquire about
commissions, your specialty requirements, or purchase prices. Click

PATHWAYS RATTLE BALL
2001
Turned and Stained Poplar
18 inch diameter
Price on Request
The Pathways Rattle Ball is crisscrossed with identifiable and permanent
evidence of transient animals: bison, cat, deer, dog, horse, squirrel,
etc. Each created its own unique trail, like ephemeral footprints left in
the soft sand at water's edge. Their shallow impressions, however, were
fossilized thus recording their existence, their movement, and their
mystery. What did they look like? What were they thinking? Where were
they going? ...Questions...

RORSHACH RATTLE BALL
2001
Turned and Painted Poplar
18 inch diameter
Price On Request
The assemblage of fantasy human portraits that encompass this Rattle Ball
invite individual exploration and interpretation, a figural RORSHACH text.
Reminiscent of historical ceramic Delftware, the images were achieved by
brushing a layer of contrasting translucent blue glaze over a crazed
white ground. From a distance, the sphere appears to be covered with a
decorative dark and light polka dot pattern. Closer examination of the
orb, however, reveals that the irregular "dots" are actually odd
characterizations, dozens and dozens of them, all of imaginary people
portrayed as painted silhouettes, each one different and unique.

ANCIENT RATTLE BALL
2001
Turned and Painted Poplar
18 inch diameter
Price on Request
Is this wooden orb a relic from the past? The music of its rattle has
long been silent, and much of its iconography is now difficult to read,
because of a grayed and aging surface. Was it once a story-ball decorated
with pictographs significant to a person, tribe, or culture? Was there
some mystic or spiritual purpose? What remains? *** A large pied
serpent encircles the globe connecting symbols representing various
subjects and themes. Identifying a few of those, one discovers bears,
deer, hunters wearing deer masks, foot prints, whales, fish, birds,
skulls, and a boat-shaped grave. Are these separate or connected thoughts
which once recorded important life dramas? How do we now dicipher such
ancient meanings with contemporary perspectives?

GLYF RATTLE BALL
2001
Turned and Painted Poplar
18 inch diameter
Price on Request
In our distant past, humans began drawing on dark cave walls. Their
sophisticated petroglyphs portrayed those images most crucial to their
survival. As we evolved and became more worldly, the act of marking on any
and all available flat surfaces like empty walls, structural members, and
signs became universally practiced. The mysterious was transformed into
public self-gratification. *** The sculptural sphere GLYF is comprised
of transparent layers representing this visual development. The first
layer depicts ancient rock drawings of bulls, deer, horses, hunters, and a
cryptic geometrical grid. Superimposed over those are the stenciled wood
TROOPS and the formula E=MC2. Adjacent to that
layer are the signs for RECYCLING, a STAR, YIN-YANG, "Kilroy was here,"
and a RADIATION WARNING. The stylized RECYCLING symbol paradoxically
appears as a thought balloon emanating from one of the first petroglyphs.
A large PEACE EMBLEM spans some of those. Finally, more contemporary
urban graffiti such as RIOT, ANTI, SQUAD, and polka-dotted PIG obscure
history while proclaiming today.
