Big Antique Shows-Some Cancelled Some Not

Paul Fusco

February 2, 2009

Unfortunately I can’t see good things happening on the show front. The Miami and New York Modernism shows were canceled due to a lack of dealers and interest. Now I understand that the large Boston Antique show has also been canceled due to the lack of interest. So far the Boston Modernism show in April is still a go. My brother promotes this show and he has said he is going to proceed with the show in spite of the economy. I, of course, am wishing him and his partner well. We are promoting a vintage sports card and memorabilia show in April at the Strongsville Holiday Inn. The focus of the show is pre-1960 sports memorabilia. So far, the dealer sign up for show has been slow but attendees have been calling in anticipation. What is going on with the Michigan Ann Arbor show this spring??

Paul, I am a friend of Gene and Linda’s from Michigan. From what I am hearing from a promoter who does the Ann Arbor Antique Market and many other shows around the country is that in the five shows he has already done so far this year the attendance is good. Sales are not great but people are coming to the shows and spending money. I think the big mega shows out east that have large booth rental prices are finding that some dealers are staying closer to home and most likely selling privately. The promoters that I have contacted are all lowering the prices on the booth spaces. We plan on doing more shows this year than before;  so, hopefully, we can reach new buyers. Lets pray that what the “brain trust” in Washington is doing doesn’t completely ruin this country. Ken

I read somewhere recently that the Maine Antique Digest sponsored antique show held in Massachusetts since 1966 has been canceled this year.
